my dilemma

See this...?

...and this?

those are pictures of our beautiful (and enormous) back yard. Half an acre of lush lawn inside the city limits. The perfect yard for...

Also the perfect yard for a swimming pool, swingset, and baseball games with daddy. Perfectly perfect in every way.

Except one. One thing stands between me and my perfect yard.

These little pesty pestersons keep the redhead and me from playing outside. The minute I go outside, I look like this...

Well, I don't exactly look like an old wrinkly man with no shirt on, but you know what I mean. You think I'm kidding? Nope. It really is that bad. Its miserable. I have some bug spray, but it. does. not. work. Evidenced by the bajillion mosquitoes that still land on me even when I'm covered in repellent.

So, I pose to you a question. Does anyone know of anything (preferably natural/organic) that does work and won't harm the redhead's or my skin?

That way, I might be able to enjoy this...

again.

Oh I do have a bug spray that actually works. Let me get the name for you and come back later. I know what you mean though...you wanna go outside and play, but the bugs...oh the bugs...hate em...

Have you tried the Avon Skin So Soft? I've heard that works good. I used an Off product that was safe for children last year and it seemed to work on Hazel.

I was thinking about Skin So Soft too.....that works for us. Hannah is particularly sensitive to mosquitos and her bites turn into welts, then scab over. Ugh! Your yard is SO beautiful.....I hate that you can't enjoy it:(

We happen to have a new Avon store that just opened near our house. I'll have to check it out and see if they have Skin So Soft. Thanks! I welcome other suggestions too.

Avon has a bug guard/ skin so soft that has sunscreen in it (30 spf). It keeps the mosquitos and gnats away from us!

We use one of the Off varieties, and it works well for us. Claire, Walker, and I are particularly delicious smelling and we get large welts. (Remember that one I got during Spring Break that was as big as my hand?) Anyway, I digress. There is a spray that you can spray your yard down with. It's kind of expensive, but worth it. I'll ask my dad what the name is, and maybe Mr. Baseball can do that for you.

I wish I had a good recommendation that hasn't already been mentioned. We use the Avon stuff mentions above and it seems to work. We are fair skinned redheads, too, so maybe that's the one for you, too.
It bums me out that you can't enjoy that beautiful oasis of a backyard because of those bloodsucking little buggers! I wish my backyard looked like that! I can keep wishing....

BTW, I'm thankful your washing maching didn't burn your house down!

I have to chime in with the Avon SSS repellant stuff...it's the ONLY thing that works for me. Caroline and I (my Caroline, that is!) swell up after being bitten, but the SSS stuff really works.

And you know why they attack you? 'Cause you're super sweet. Mosquitoes will fly 100 miles to land on my tasty person, I kid you not. I'm always the one being eaten up while everyone else smugly remarks, "Oh, they don't bother me at all." Well, poop on y'all...they bother ME, and sometimes, not always, but sometimes it IS about me.

Whoa...got on my soapbox there for a minute. I'll step down now. HA!

Get yourselve Lavender scented everything...oils, candles, creams.

Pestersons hate Lavender.

Plant some too. It grows like weed and looks pretty!

Nothing works better than Burt's Bees Herbal Insect Repellent. We used it the whole time we were in Costa Rica and it works extremely well. It's made out of Rosemary, Lemongrass, and Citronella oils mixed with oils. It smells good too.

By the way anonymos is Jenn Burrell. For some reason I couldn't get my name to show. I really wasn't trying to be all secret agent about my bug spray comments.

Some good suggestions here! I wish I could be more helpful, but we're getting eaten alive here in Wisconsin, so I'm useless. The tube of AfterBite is our most prized possession! The mossies seem to be prehistoric in size this year!

I recently got to attend an amazing cooking class that was held outdoors at the chef's personal home overlooking a gorgeous lake--it was an amazing evening, but my mosquito phobias were at full alert because 1. I hate mosquitoes and 2. they love me. Part way through the cooking class some automatic misters came on and lightly sprayed both ourselves and our outdoor kitchen area--turns out that the chef always mists his guests and yard with a natural mixture of garlic oil and chilies. Sounds odd, I know, but it worked amazingly well! It didn't irritate the skin, didn't smell noxious and best of all, it worked.

I also don't like to use chemical sprays on my kiddos or yard, so this has been a great revelation for us--
Blessings!

I do not have any natural stuff, but we have a BIG time problem here and all the neighbors use Cutters' Bug Free Backyard spray. You attach it to the hose and spray it on grass, fences, trees, everything and it keeps them away for a month. It has been such a life saver cause my son is terribly allergic.

I have always had luck with vanilla. Anything works. The scented lotion, body sprays and I have added vanilla extract to a spray bottle of water. It all has worked. HTH

I always spray myself and the kids btu DH always says no - well guess who gets bit. LOL
