When I first heard you were reuniting I'll admit my heart did a little flutter. Thoughts of you in your ripped jeans, topless hats, and batman shirts flooded my mind. Our first meeting was at Carowinds in 1989. I got the ticket for my 12th birthday. My friend Jenny went with me and even though we were on the 54th row, I felt like you were singing just to me. Some girl name Tiffany opened up for you, and although I liked her music, I could have done without her. My focus was on the five of you, and thankfully, you never even noticed that I maimed another fan while doing the arm swing to Hangin' Tough. Jon, you were my favorite. My sister liked you Donnie. And Joey, Jenny liked you the best, with your piercing blue eyes and all.
I knew every word to every song on the Hangin' Tough album. I tried to dance the way you did in the You Got It (the Right Stuff) video and wanted to be the cute girl in the dark skirt that runs through what looks like a old cemetary in New Orleans. Anyway, I'm digressing.
I saw your new video "Summertime" yesterday and I have to say, boys - um, I mean men, I was clearly disappointed in what I saw. Its been 14 years since we said good-bye and since then the world has seen the rise of The Backstreet Boys, N'Sync, and Il Divo (we have Simon Cowell to thank for that one). What I saw yesterday was a meager attempt to regain your fame of days gone by. The song...well, it didn't really have legs to stand on. Your legs, however, can still do some dancin', but I can tell you're getting older, as you don't move quite as gracefully. Thank you though that you can still dance, cause its really obvious now that you can't sing. I was blind to this fact when I was younger, but now, the truth can't be denied. It's amazing what digital recording and voice enhancement can do for a recording artist. All this to say - I just see us moving in different directions. I think we need to see other people and clearly your contingent will probably be under 15 - with a few stragglers leftover from my generation. I would say it's not you, its me, but clearly, it's you - sorry.
I guess we'll always have the memories NKOTB. Unfortunately for you, your tour ends here. Parting is such sweet sorrow. However, I will bestow upon you one parting gift. Please use as needed.
Sincerely,
Caroline
P.S. Go ahead...sing "Please Don't Go Girl"...just for kicks.

15 coins in my pocket:
You are so funny. I have not seen their new gig, but I didn't think they would be all too impressive.
I liked Jon, although one of my friend's had NKOTB toilet paper!
My dad worked the NKOTB concert at Memorial Stadium in Charlotte a LOOOOONG time ago. He said a girl about 13 years old offered "herself" I guess would be the tactful way of say that? to my dad for a chance to go backstage. I just never liked them that much.
Parting is such sweet sorrow!
My husband and I saw a commercial for this the other day and nearly laughed our tails off.
On a side note, I purposely came over to comment today b/c I realized I was a lurker here and wanted you to know I think you're a hoot. I have two red heads, myself (plus two blonds, but that's another blogger...I presume) and just wanted to give you a shout.
Keep it up =)
Karin
I thought we were going to be friends. I mean, my child is named Caroline, But then you maligned NKOTB and I'm thinking we're gonna have to break up before we even get seriously started.
I'll read some more and then determine if I'm able to forgive you. Oh wait--you like Francine Rivers? ALL IS WELL. She's my favorite in the wide world. I thrust The Mark of the Lion trilogy upon every person I meet, and I do believe Redeeming Love is required reading for all Christians.
Thanks for stopping by Lulaville...I will be back to see you!
as sad as it may be.....i am perfectly willing to own the fact that should they make a little stop in Charlotte on their tour....darn well better believe i'll be there....you may start laughing now.... :) oh and no, owen will not be going....i had him DVR their performance on the Today show the other week.....
Dear Caroline,
WOW! We must be soul sisters. I too, was at the 1989 Carowinds concert. It was the day before 7th grade started. I was decked out in my hot pink tie dyed shirt with a giant black peace sign and rolled up cut off blue jean shorts. And of course, white Keds with no socks.
I admit, Tiffany was a mere distraction. We all know who we were there for. It’s a good thing you didn’t say Jordan was your favorite, because we might have had to scrap. And let me assure you, I would win.
As for the Hangin’ Tough number, was that you that whacked me in the back halfway through the song? Just so you know, it really hurt. Also, whoever spilled their giant bubba cup of coke all over my newly purchased NKOTB poster book, you’re not forgiven. And you never will be.
I think we would have a good time if you ever want to hang out. Should I have my mom call your mom? I still have the NKOTB VHS with the music video you mentioned in your post. I know what you’re thinking, but don’t worry. I have a dual DVD/VHS player! I also have the piano music to I’ll Be Lovin’ You. I understand you have a great singing voice, so come on over.
Oh, and if we ever get bored, there’s always the Nelson video. After the raaaaaaaaaaain…
Yours truly,
Mrs. Noonzie
Oh, how I loved NKOTB. I remember when McDonalds was selling their posters, I had everyone of them hanging in my room. My friend had everything NKOTB you could imagine, books, bedding, clothes, video's, sleeping bag, I was so jealous. Thanks for stopping by and commenting today. I love the comment on Teletubbies.
hahahahahahahahahahahahahah
wait---catching my breath
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahhah
Actually after I did my little post about them on my b.day--I went and dug out my NKOTB "Hangin' Tough" on VHS. Yup. I still own ALL their videos! I suppose it's pretty pointless now with you tube and all, but still--I hear those voices and see those faces and I'm 14 all over again. Though I could use some bengay lovin' myself....
Wait! I just read Mrs. Noonzie's comment. There's another VHS copy of the videos still out there? Dang! And I was going to sell mine on ebay and make lots of money...
and I {hearted} Nelson too---
(Here she comes. Mmmmmm just like an angel. Seems like forever since she's been on my mind....).
I think I still have that cassette single laying around somewhere. Off to find it :)!
I can't even pretend to be ashamed that I have tickets to the reunion tour! I am SO STINKING EXCITED I can't even hide it!
Of course, they will never be the same. I heard Danny complaining about his hip hurting after dancing...oh but the memories...
I'll post pictures, you all will be jealous - oh you will be jealous :)
I too was a big fan of NKOTB. I was the Joey fan. My dad even drove my best friend and I to Boston in hope of meeting our future husbands. The closest we got was to Danny's dad Dan the mailman...
I was excited to hear that they are reuniting. I may even go to the concert to relive the days.
I found you through SITS, and as I was looking through found an NKOTB post. I too helped fund the "hanging Tough" tour. I got to check out of school early to attend their concert at Independence Stadium... sitting in the upper deck and just knowing that if they made eye contact Jon would rush to my side :) All that being said, and much to my husband's embarassment, I am dusting off the t-shirts and will be sitting 7th row when they play Dallas in October.
I too loved The New Kids, but as we grow up we realize that older truly is wiser. The moment they allowed themselves to be called "NKOTB" was their downfall. Your blogs are SITS gems :)
I L-O-V-E-D NKOTB!!!! Oh Jon was my favorite, too. I remember dancing in the hallways at school...er...or...something that resembled dancing. ha ha Oh good memories...the bengay thing was funny.
